Development has been making fast progress at Summit Pointe, largely in thanks to the coordinated effort of its development team: Chesapeake-based Dollar Tree; Virginia Beach-based Saunders+Crouse Architects; and, Newport News-based Clancy & Theys Construction Company. Together the team has employed groundbreaking construction technology to aid the development’s fast progress.
The Summit Pointe construction journey began with Phase One, completed in 2018. This development, which was finalized in October 2018, saw the delivery of the iconic high-rise Dollar Tree office tower, a state-of-the-art workspace which now houses thousands of members of the Dollar Tree workforce. This 13-floor building is the tallest office tower in Chesapeake and is an invaluable asset in the Coastal Virginia skyline, visible all the way from Interstate 64.
The completion of the high-rise Dollar Tree office tower was celebrated in August 2019 with a campus dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony. Dollar Tree executives, families of Dollar Tree founders Macon Brock and Ray Compton, and current and past employees along with representatives from the State of Virginia, the City of Chesapeake, and many of the vendor partners all gathered for this ceremonial dedication.
Phase One construction also delivered an easily-accessible, 1500-car parking deck and infrastructure for future development, including public roads such as Belaire Avenue, sidewalks, underground utility ductbanks, and decorative street lighting.
Beginning in June 2019 with a ceremonial groundbreaking event and scheduled for completion in mid-2020, Phase Two of construction at Summit Pointe is officially underway. Over the summer, Coastal Virginia residents saw steel erections for the new buildings pop up along the iconic Belaire Avenue. Construction crews have been hard at work, putting in place the foundation for several spaces, including ground-level retail and restaurant space, the brand-new office tower 555 Belaire, and Summit Pointe’s first living community, the Helix apartments.
The steel erection for 555 Belaire was completed in October 2019 and celebrated with a Topping Out Ceremony attended by leaders from Dollar Tree, the Summit Pointe development team, and the City of Chesapeake.
The first two of four blocks of construction, which will include ground-level retail and restaurant space, the 555 Belaire office tower, and the Helix apartment community, are scheduled for completion in mid-2020. The 555 Belaire office tower will contain six stories of Class A+ office space with ground-level retail and restaurant space available. The Helix apartment community will contain the first 133 living units available at Summit Pointe, will sit atop more ground-level retail space, and will feature direct access to the adjacent 1,500-car parking garage.
Construction on the remaining two blocks of Phase Two, which will include more retail, office, and residential spaces, is scheduled to begin in early 2020.
